Charles River School
Charles River Creative Arts Program

The Charles River Creative Arts Program (CRCAP), a summer day program of the Charles River School in Dover, Massachusetts, was founded in 1970 to provide an environment in which young people could pursue and develop an interest in the arts.

Students pick their own schedule from a wide range of classes in the visual and performing arts as well as sports and writing. At CRCAP, young people can pursue current interests or investigate new areas of endeavor. We offer two four-week sessions for children ages 8 to 15 with approximately 275 students attending each of the two sessions.

Visit the website (www.crcap.org) to learn more and to view a video of this extraordinary program.

Director

The Director of CRCAP is responsible for the artistic oversight and direction of the program as well as the day-to-day management of all aspects of the program. The Director of CRCAP reports directly to the Head of School; the Business Office staff and the school’s senior administrators also serve as resources working with the Director of CRCAP and the Administrative Coordinator.

Decisions regarding program format, contents, style and theme are the responsibility of the Director. S/he is also responsible for all staff recruitment and hiring (approximately 75 people), staff supervision, budget projection and management ($1.2 million budget). Working collaboratively with the Program’s Administrative Coordinator, Department Chairs and other selected staff members, the Director determines the classes (approximately 135) that are offered in Art, Dance, Drama, Gymnastics, Music, Media, Sports, Writing, Photography and Textiles. The Director schedules the daily menu of courses as well as the Arts Festivals and s/he sets the standards and tone for all staff, for student behavior and the program on a daily basis. S/he serves as the primary public personae of the program throughout the year. The Director also helps meet the needs of individual students who may need guidance and support, and assists all students to be successful members of the summer community. The Director maintains a commitment to diversity (cultural, racial and socio-economic) with the student and staff population. In consultation with staff, S/he designs and recruits for the guest artists program. S/he serves as a resource for all the staff regarding teaching issues and challenges. Working with the school’s Director of Development, the Director is responsible for cultivation and fundraising activities. The Director of CRCAP is the representative of the summer program to the CRCAP Advisory Committee.
