The Early Years at Charles River School
In the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, we offer children a variety of interesting materials to investigate, time to explore, ample chance to play, and the opportunity to express themselves in a variety of media.

In these years,
children develop literacy skills in a language-rich
and print-rich environment. They listen to
literature read aloud to them and begin writing
by drawing pictures and dictating stories
to a teacher.
Children learn mathematics through hands-on investigation and problem-solving activities. Using manipulatives, such as pattern blocks and geoboards, our youngest students learn to recognize, predict, and generate their own patterns.
Through thematic studies, pre-kindergartners and kindergartners learn about themselves and the world around them. Thematic units in these grades vary but have included Self and Family, Mammals, Rain First, and Farms.
Children in our early grades participate fully in the life of the school. Like our older children, they work with specialist teachers in art, music, library, computer, and physical education. They also attend and participate in weekly assemblies and special events such as May Day. Children have a seventh or eighth grade "buddy" with whom they meet regularly, share special occasions, and develop a unique relationship.
