Curriculum Library Extended Day
Technology is integrated into the curriculum at each grade level in a developmentally-appropriate manner. In pre-kindergarten through sixth grades, we provide students with specific times during the week when they visit the computer laboratory to focus on technology skills.

Our pre-kindergartners work to become familiar with the keyboard, mouse, and screen and dictate simple stories, while kindergartners utilize educational software to reinforce beginning literacy and number skills and basic concepts. In first and second grades, students use technology to extend their study of their classroom theme using storytelling software, drawing objects and scenes relating to their theme using software, and researching theme-related topics. In third through sixth grades, students begin to learn basic programming concepts, research topics related to their classroom themes using the Internet, and use computers as a tool for extended writing projects. In seventh/eighth grades, students do not have specific periods dedicated to technology use, as they further incorporate computer use into every subject. Many of their major projects require a technology-based component, such as a PowerPoint presentation, a photo essay, or a movie.

At Charles River School, an impressive collection of hardware and software supports our technology program. Our students may use numerous computer workstations with Internet access in our computer laboratory, our language laboratory, our library, and our classrooms. We also provide individual AlphaSmart units for students in fourth and fifth grades, and several teachers use SmartBoard technology in their classrooms. Our array of up-to-date software offers students opportunities to express their knowledge in a variety of ways and to explore multimedia technology.
