Fifth Grade Theme
“The Changing Face of America” is the focus of the fifth grade thematic study, which integrates most subject areas. Fifth graders begin the year looking at the topic of prejudice, an umbrella topic for our units of study of slavery, industrialization, immigration to and migration within the United States. We study the impact of the Industrial Revolution on farm life, slavery, the cultures brought to America in the great waves of Ellis Island immigration, and the later migration of former slaves to northern cities as slavery ends. The thread of social injustice and prejudice is woven through these topics as we look at how people who change history are treated.
