Fourth Grade Theme

To increase awareness of both the diversity and the commonality of human experience, fourth graders consider and compare the mythology, art, and traditions of different cultures with an emphasis on classical Greek and Yoruba. In the study of culture we examine how values are taught, the role of oral tradition, artistic expression, and forms of worship. Before delving into these cultures, students reflect on their own culture. We begin the year by reading and dramatizing fables and creation stories. We move on to the study of Greek culture and mythology.  Following this, the class explores many different cultures in Africa before focusing on Yoruba culture. Children also participate in a unit on disabilities. Our goal for this unit is to increase students’ knowledge about disabilities in the context of diversity.
