Music Program

Music Classes

In the early grades, music education is first about immersion and discovery. Once children discover the joy and inherent value of hands-on learning, we introduce concepts and music literacy. Students learn to sing with a full, relaxed tone as they gain understanding of musical styles and culture. Each year, they expand skills of creative musical participation through singing, playing instruments and dancing.

At the same time, students learn about musical notation and write and perform their own music. Students in 7th and 8th grades participate in a multi-arts program, where they work directly with artists in a variety of disciplines, including singing, drama and dance.

Chorus

The CRS Chorus is open to students in Grades 4-8 and performs an eclectic repertoire of jazz, pop, folk and classical styles. The chorus performs at Winter Festival and on May Day/Grand Persons’ Day, as well as at sharing assemblies during the school year. The emphasis is on enjoyment of singing and ensemble experience while developing control of pitch, dynamics, diction and harmonization. Chorus meets Tuesday and Friday mornings from 7:40 to 8:10 a.m. and home practice at home is expected.

Private Music Lessons

CRS offers private and group instruction in music to students in Grades 1-8 before and after school and during the day as the schedule allows. Instructors are professional instrumentalists and music educators who are aware of the school philosophy and work as closely as possible with each student’s individual learning style. Private lessons are an additional expense and are contracted separately.
