Classroom Community Service

Each grade at CRS works on a community service project that is age appropriate and often connected to their classsroom theme.  Last year, the following projects were undertaken by CRS classrooms.

The Kindergarten class collected and donated blankets and towels to the Buddy Dog Humane Society in Sudbury, MA.  The class decided on this project after completing a unit on pets in the classroom.

The First Grade organized a Halloween collection for Unicef.  Students distributed the Unicef boxes, made an announcement at an all school assembly explaining the project, and then counted all of the change and reported back to the school.

Second Grade students chose to collect and donate items to the Medfield Animal Shelter.  After collecting various items for the shelter, the students visited to make their donation in person.

The Third Grade class gathered and donated gently used books to a local Head Start program in conjunction with the annual CRS Book Fair. The students then visited Head Start and spent time in the classroom with the younger children, in many cases reading aloud to them.

One of the units in Fourth Grade is a year-long study of disabilities.  Students learn about various types of disabilities, and in addition to monthly personal community service goals, the class participates in a project to learn about and raise money for the Free Wheelchair Mission – an organization that makes low cost wheelchairs available to people in need around the world.

Each year the Fifth Grade completes a Read-a-thon to raise money for an organization chosen by the class.  Last year’s class read hundreds of books to raise money for Free the Children.

Sixth Graders had the opportunity throughout the year to participate in The Cupcake Club or The Meals on Wheels Club.  Both groups met monthly to bake for a local shelter or the local Meals on Wheels organization.

Seventh and Eighth Graders help with some of the all-school community service projects – each year they pack up and help deliver food from the Thanksgiving food drive to the Needham Food Pantry – and also initiate and plan their own year-long projects.
