From jewelry making to edible art, basketball clinics to workshops in digital photography and celebrated artist masterclasses, Charles River Community Programs has opportunities to meet every interest. We offer programs for adults and kids alike. Our students, teachers, alumni, parents, neighbors and the general public are all welcome to register for our programs. Jewelry Making

The only thing better than finding the perfect piece of jewelry is making it yourself! Get to know the basic tools and techniques needed for creating beautiful bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Don’t miss a rare opportunity to learn from studio artist, Anna Summergrad—one of CRCAP’s most skilled and passionate instructors. Why not make mom, dad or even the whole family smile with the gift of your handcrafted jewelry this holiday season?

Holiday Baking

Each week, get messy baking traditional holiday dishes from different cultures. Tour the world without leaving our kid-friendly test kitchen. The instructor is a master of all things culinary and has years of experience teaching, guiding and inspiring young children. Bon appetit!

When: 1:30 – 3:00PM Wednesdays (November 30, December 7 & 14)

Basketball Clinic

Learn the fundamentals of basketball in this series of clinics designed to introduce you to the challenges and rewards of the game. No more waiting til 5^th grade for your day on the court. This program, led by Coach Enrique Polletta, will have you dribbling, passing, and shooting in no time.

Age: Grades 2 – 4

When: 3:15 – 4:30pm Fridays (December 2 & 9)

CRS Centennial Golf Tournament

Swing into the fall with CRS at the Centennial Golf Tournament! Please join us on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 for a fun day of golf in support of Charles River School. The tournament will take place at the beautiful Brookmeadow Country Club in Canton and will include a box lunch, 18 holes of golf and dinner. This award-winning golf course is challenging enough to provide a test for better golfers, but its wide fairways and large greens level the playing field for folks with higher handicaps.

The Centennial Golf Tournament will help celebrate our 100th year and bring together CRS parents, alumni, friends and business partners for an enjoyable day on the links while raising funds to help support the school’s mission. CRCAP Festival Day – Saturday, August 20th

On Saturday, August 20, the Charles River Creative Arts Program held its second Arts Festival of the summer. Students showcased work produced over a four-week session and the campus was filled with exhibits displaying painting, drawing, sculpture, clay, collage, textiles, and even a collection of hand-crafted “tiny universes.” Animated films and numerous live action cinematic works received their world premieres. Live performances included Hip-Hop, ballet, musical ensembles of varied styles, fashion shows, rock operas, completely improvised musicals and more. Festival Day also featured hands-on activities for the whole family.

Highlights of the day included two original CRCAP musicals. Our Music Theater Troupe performed a revue of quirky poems and fun songs based on the children’s book, Blue Moo. Our older campers showcased their talents in evening performances of Ready for Life: A Zombie Musical on Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20 at 8:00 PM. This original musical was written and scored by CRCAP’s director, Mike Descoteaux ’94.

Square Dance Set for September 17th

A CRS tradition is being revived in honor of our Centennial year — the all-school square dance. On Saturday, September 17th from 3:00-5:30 pm all CRS families, alumni, faculty and friends are invited to a traditional square dance. Professional caller Tony Parkes will be on hand to teach the uninitiated and refresh the memory those who haven’t square danced in a while. The afternoon promises to be a great time with lively music, refreshments and fun for all ages. The party will be held at 177 Farm Road in Sherborn with a nominal admissions fee. Grab your partner and join us!

Marion L. Earley Endowment Announced

In recognition of Mimi Earley’s 30 year career at Charles River School and of her commitment to making it possible for children of all economic backgrounds to attend CRS, the school has announced the establishment of the Marion L. Earley Endowment for Financial Aid. It was Mimi’s wish that this fund be created in lieu of gifts or other forms of recognition on campus.

Mimi Earley retired last month after a career that spanned thirty years and touched countless families. Her time at CRS was remarkable for the energy, vision and absolute belief in the school’s mission that she brought to all of her interactions with children, families and colleagues. Gifts to the fund will allow the school to offer financial assistance to deserving and promising children who will enrich the school community and improve the educational experience of all of the students.

Summer Programs Beat the Heat

Despite record temperatures in the area over the past week, campers at the Charles River Creative Arts Camp and Creative Starts, the new offering for 6-8 year olds, have been having a blast. CRCAP wrapped up its first session on July 22 with an extremely successful and lively Festival Day. The second session is now in full swing with campers engaged in a wide variety of classes in the visual and performing arts, music, sports, writing and more. Children in the Creative Starts program have been exploring the world of fairy tales, castles, dragons and knights as they develop their artistic talents. The CRS campus is never a dull place in the summer!

CRCAP Festival Day – Friday, July 22

Everyone is invited to the Charles River Creative Arts Program’s first Arts Festival of the summer, to be held on Friday, July 22. Students from the Metro West and Boston area will showcase work produced over a four-week session featuring 139 classes in the arts. The campus will be filled with exhibits displaying painting, drawing, sculpture, clay, collage, textiles, and even a collection of hand-crafted “tiny universes.” Animated films, live-action “cliffhangers” and “mockumentaries” as well as numerous shorter cinematic works will receive their world premieres. Live performances include Hip-Hop, ballet and jazz dance, musical ensembles of varied styles, fashion shows, rock operas, completely improvised musicals and more. Festival Day includes hands-on activities for the whole family. Food is available for purchase and the public is invited to the entire event, which runs from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Highlights of the day include two original CRCAP musicals. Our Music Theater Troupe will be performing an original musical adaptation of the classic children’s book The Cricket in Times Square. The story is adapted for the stage by Faith Soloway and Arlynn Polletta, who serve as musical director and director, respectively. Cricket in Times Square premieres during the Arts Festival.

Our older campers showcase their talents in evening performances of Fishmonger: the Musical! on Thursday, July 21 and Friday, July 22 at 8:00 PM. This original tale of a stinky town covered in fish features a book, music and lyrics by Adam Brooks. The production is directed by Alison Sherman. Tickets are six dollars and proceeds benefit the Charles River Creative Arts Program’s scholarship fund.

The campus is alive with activity as campers are engaged in singing, movie-making, dancing, composing, acting, painting, textiles, animation, photography, swimming, sports and more!
