Our first goal in Music is to create a fun, safe, respectful and cooperative environment where students actively enjoy expressing themselves through singing, dancing, drumming, creating and sharing ideas. We teach music from many different perspectives to meet students' varying levels of knowledge and skill. New elements are taught using physical, aural and visual activities. Children often work in pairs or small groups, learning from each other and developing their cooperative skills. Learning songs, dances and rhythms from diverse cultures helps students emotionally connect with these cultures and often reinforces and enhances classroom themes.

  • PreK - Second Grade

    In the early grades, we start with getting the music into children's bodies through rhythm and movement song games, moving in time to the beat, eurhythmics and body percussion. These young students immerse themselves in playing and exploring a variety of percussion and melodic instruments. Children are naturally creative and they enjoy creating and orchestrating stories, as well as composing their own short musical pieces, writing songs together and choreographing movements.
  • Third - Eighth Grade

    In the upper grades, music is taught primarily through multi-week projects, often tied in with the classroom theme.  From third graders writing and choreographing a class opera scene to sixth graders composing music on unconventional instruments to represent an autumn day, the focus is on instilling a love of music that will last forever.  Students learn to read and write basic music notation, experiment on a variety of instruments, study many kinds of movement and dance from different cultures, and of course, sing!

    In seventh and eighth grades, students have “multi-arts” in lieu of traditional music class, where they experience many different kinds of performing arts with professionals in the field.  While the projects vary from year to year, typical projects include drama, music, musical theater, hip-hop dance and choral singing.

    Students in grades 4-8 can also choose to participate in chorus, an optional  program that meets twice a week throughout the year.
