Guest speaker Shanelle Henry, Director of Equity and Inclusion at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, Conn., recently visited campus to collaborate with CRS faculty and staff around the topic, “Engaging in Identity-Conscious Conversations.” Shanelle presented and facilitated discussions during an extended faculty meeting, which are often used for professional development workshops, curriculum planning, and enrichment programming.
At the beginning of the program, CRS faculty identified goals for the evening’s session: learning additional ways to support all students; developing a richer toolkit for the curriculum; recognizing the positive work around diversity, equity and inclusion in which CRS has already engaged while acknowledging there is always more to learn and new ways to grow as a community. Throughout the program, discussions circled back to these goals.
In addition to her role at Greens Farms, Shanelle is the Vice-Chair of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) Commission on Diversity in Independent Schools. She is also the founder of the Institute for Teaching Diversity and Social Justice (IDSJ), a “professional development program open to individuals interested in building more inclusive and affirming classrooms and school communities.” Learn more about IDSJ at https://www.idsj.us/.
