For Banned Book Week (Sept. 23 - 29), 5th graders each received a book that had been banned, wrapped in blue paper, to take home and read. Students talked about their books with the class, wrote letters to the authors, discussed the First Amendment, and reflected on books being banned. The list of books that has been banned is incredible – from "The Giving Tree" to "Charlotte's Web" to "Strega Nona." In response to the prompt "A world without books is like..." one student responded "a world without color."
