World Language at CRS

The world language program at CRS is an important component of our academic program and commitment to cultural competency. Our PreK-8 world language program cultivates a deep appreciation for languages and builds a solid foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Cultural studies are an integral component, and CRS students of all ages have the opportunity to explore many cultures through language.

  • PreK - Fifth Grade

The elementary (PreK-5) world language program at CRS will:
    • Support our mission to develop culturally competent students - “Our graduates know themselves, understand others, and shape the future of our diverse world with confidence and compassion.”
    • Connect to and support the curriculum in each grade, be exploratory in nature, and give students opportunities to learn language in context.
    • Build students’ comfort and confidence with learning a new language.
    • Give students experience with understanding and speaking both Spanish and French to provide a base for the more formal language study that begins in sixth grade.
  • Sixth - Eighth Grade

Students choose French or Spanish and begin studying that language at the end of fifth grade through eighth grade. Instruction is increasingly in the target language and students refine their language skills primarily through paired speaking and writing activities in the classroom and through their individual work on their iPads. The goal is for students to feel confident about taking risks while placing appropriate emphasis on correct usage, pronunciation, good content, and improved fluency in their communications.
